IIT Bombay Launches India’s First Academia-Led Deep-Tech Venture Capital Fund Of ₹250 Cr

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has launched the country’s first deep-tech venture capital fund managed by an academia-linked incubator, marking a major milestone for India’s startup and research ecosystem.

The fund, named the Y-Point Venture Capital Fund, has a targeted corpus of ₹250 crore and is anchored by the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE). The initiative aims to provide early-stage risk capital to deep-tech startups built on advanced scientific and engineering research.

Boosting India’s Deep-Tech Startup Ecosystem

Over the past two decades, SINE has supported 500+ startups and 1,000 innovators emerging from IIT Bombay. With the launch of the Y-Point Venture Capital Fund, the incubator seeks to address critical challenges faced by deep-tech ventures, including long product development cycles, high capital intensity, and limited access to specialised mentorship.

The fund will focus on pre-seed and seed-stage startups originating from IIT Bombay as well as other leading academic and research institutions across India. It plans to back 25–30 startups, with a maximum investment of up to ₹15 crore per venture.

Key focus areas include:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced computing
  • Nuclear and defence technologies
  • Climate tech and sustainability
  • Life sciences and healthcare
  • Space technology

Leadership Views And Vision

Speaking during his first campus visit as chairperson of IIT Bombay’s Board of Governors, K Radhakrishnan said the fund would “serve as a catalyst for building globally competitive ventures by leveraging world-class talent and cutting-edge research,” helping accelerate the transition of technologies from lab to market.

IIT Bombay director Shireesh Kedare added that the fund would further strengthen SINE’s long-standing role in nurturing the institute’s startup ecosystem.
Meanwhile, SINE CEO Shaji Varghese confirmed that the fund has received SEBI approval and is expected to close fundraising within six to nine months, backed by strong interest from alumni, institutions and corporate partners.

IIT Bombay Strategic Plan 2026–2030 Unveiled

  1. Learning-centric education with experiential and student-driven models, international joint degrees, and expanded online programmes
  2. Frontier research leadership across AI/ML, climate tech, medtech, quantum sciences, advanced materials, space and defence
  3. Industry- and society-relevant research, focusing on deeper industry collaboration, startup growth, and commercialisation of research

New Hostel Facility For Students

As part of campus infrastructure development, IIT Bombay inaugurated Hostel 19, a new G+9-storey residential block spread over 300,000 sq ft, accommodating 1,051 students. Designed with a courtyard layout for natural light and ventilation, the facility includes modern living spaces, shared amenities and a rooftop recreational area.
