BJP Sweeps Maharashtra Civic Elections, Secures 1,425 Seats Across 29 Corporations

In the 2026 Maharashtra civic elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a decisive victory, winning 1,425 out of 2,869 seats across 29 municipal corporations across the state. This resounding performance underscores the BJP’s sweeping appeal in urban local body polls and marks a significant political shift in Maharashtra’s civic landscape.

The BJP’s success extended to key urban centres, including Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), where it won 89 seats and its ally, the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), secured 29 seats, helping the Mahayuti alliance cross the majority mark. This result ended decades of dominance by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena in the cash-rich civic body.

Across other major cities, the BJP also registered strong performances — claiming significant seats in Pune, Nagpur and Nashik, among others — while opposition parties including Congress, NCP and regional outfits lagged behind in many municipalities.

This comprehensive win in urban local governance reflects the party’s ongoing political momentum in the state, following its performance in recent assembly and national elections.
