Political Slugfest Begins at Newly Minted BMC in Mumbai

Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is entering a combative political phase after the results of the 2026 civic elections dramatically changed the city’s power dynamics. For the first time in more than two decades, the Shiv Sena (UBT) has moved to the Opposition benches in the 227-member civic body, ending its long dominance and setting the stage for intense scrutiny of the new ruling alliance.

The BJP-Shinde Sena alliance emerged as the single largest grouping in the elections, with the BJP winning 89 seats and its ally the Eknath Shinde-led Sena taking 29, giving them a combined majority. The Shiv Sena (UBT) secured 65 seats, while other parties like Congress and MNS won smaller numbers.

With Ritu Tawde of the BJP set to be the new mayor, early political sparring has already begun. Tawde’s statements on issues such as illegal immigration drew swift criticism from Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, who challenged her priorities and questioned the ruling alliance’s focus.

Political observers believe this shift from decades-long Shiv Sena control to a BJP-led administration will lead to frequent clashes over civic policies, budgets and project decisions — turning the BMC into a key battleground for Mumbai politics.

Overall, the start of this new term at India’s richest municipal body marks both a power shift and the beginning of heightened political engagement as rival factions seek to assert influence over urban governance and development.
