Sudhir Mungantiwar, veteran BJP leader and Ballarpur MLA has staged a striking political comeback by playing a key role in winning the mayor and deputy mayor posts in the Chandrapur municipal corporation despite his recent career setbacks.
Just a few years ago, Mungantiwar’s political standing appeared to be in decline. He lost the Chandrapur Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general elections by a large margin, and later faced difficulties within the BJP, including resistance from the camp of fellow leader Kishor Jorgewar and being overlooked for a ministerial berth after the 2024 state polls.
Yet in the recent mayoral election, Mungantiwar’s political strategy and street-smart manoeuvring helped secure the leadership of the urban civic body even though the BJP wasn’t the single largest party. His efforts, including negotiations and candidate selection influence, caught opposition rivals off guard and demonstrated his continued relevance in local politics.
The episode highlights how experienced political figures can re-emerge after setbacks by leveraging organisational skills and timing. Mungantiwar’s influence in civic polls and negotiations has shown that a fall from political prominence — including electoral defeat and factional challenges doesn’t necessarily mean the end of political influence.
