Amid ongoing concerns in India over energy supply reliability — especially in the wake of global fuel market fluctuations — Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has stepped forward with a strong reassurance to consumers across western and southern India. The company has committed to maintaining continuous availability of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for homes and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for transport throughout its service areas in Maharashtra and Karnataka, even as global tensions influence energy networks.
This pledge comes in alignment with the Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order, 2026, under which domestic PNG and CNG usages have been officially classified as highest-priority sectors. Responding to the directive, MGL says it has implemented systems to ensure that households and vehicle owners connected to its network do not face disruptions in the fuel they rely on daily for cooking and commuting services.
To encourage wider adoption of cleaner-burning natural gas, the company has rolled out a suite of consumer-focused benefits designed to make PNG more accessible and affordable. These include free PNG gas credits worth ₹500 for new residential registrations made between March 16 and April 30, a ₹1,000 bill adjustment for residents in buildings with high adoption rates, and web-registration discounts — coupled with plans to eventually introduce zero upfront registration costs and flexible payment options. Commercial users also benefit from waived registration charges and MGL-funded supporting infrastructure.
The reassurance from MGL seeks to cushion customers from broader energy uncertainty and underscores the importance of PNG and CNG as cleaner alternatives to traditional fuels such as LPG, which has faced supply unease in parts of India due to global market pressures. Experts say the government’s priority policy reflects a strategic shift to protect household and transport energy needs first, while other sectors adapt to evolving supply dynamics.
MGL’s Managing Director Ashu Shinghal emphasised that the push is not just about supply continuity but also about strengthening consumer confidence in cleaner fuels, saying that the company will continue to expand and upgrade its distribution capabilities to meet changing demand patterns.
