Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently rode a motorcycle to the Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai as part of a high-profile effort to support fuel conservation and austerity measures advocated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The CM chose to arrive on a Royal Enfield motorcycle rather than in an official car or convoy, a symbolic gesture aimed at encouraging reduced fuel use amid rising energy concerns.
While Fadnavis described the ride as a practical way to set an example for citizens and align with the centre’s call for more sustainable habits, the move drew criticism from opposition parties. Leaders such as Vijay Wadettiwar of the Congress have called the bike ride a publicity stunt, even questioning whether the motorcycle’s mandatory Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate was valid, suggesting the act may have violated legal norms.
The political exchange highlights growing debate in Maharashtra’s political circles about how symbolic actions by public officials are perceived, with opponents arguing that such gestures distract from substantive governance issues. The ruling party, meanwhile, maintains that the CM’s actions were meant to inspire ordinary citizens to adopt simple, fuel-saving practices.
