The sudden death of <span class="aet-entity aet-person" data-title="Ajit Pawar" data-text="Ajit Anantrao Pawar is an Indian politician serving as the 8th Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra along with Eknath Shinde under Devendra Fadnavis since…” data-img=”” data-url=”https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajit_Pawar”>Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister and a senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is expected to have significant repercussions across the state’s political landscape, even though it may not immediately destabilise the Mahayuti alliance government led by the BJP and Shiv Sena (Shinde faction). Pawar died in a plane crash while attempting to land at Baramati airport, a tragedy that has sent shockwaves across political circles in Maharashtra.
In the short term, analysts believe the ruling Mahayuti government’s stability — with 230 MLAs in the 288-member assembly — is unlikely to be affected, since NCP legislators who backed Pawar’s 2023 split from the Sharad Pawar-led faction are expected to maintain support for the alliance.
However, longer-term political dynamics are more uncertain. Pawar was a central figure in Maharashtra politics, known for his deep grassroots connect, administrative experience and influence in western Maharashtra and the Maratha community. His absence is poised to affect the internal balance of power within the NCP faction he led, especially regarding the party’s leadership and its relationship with other partners in the Mahayuti.
Pawar’s leadership had also played a role in ongoing efforts at reconciliation between his faction and the one led by his uncle, veteran politician Sharad Pawar. The sudden loss casts doubt over any potential merger or future alignment, and party legislators may now face difficult decisions about their political paths, including whether to stay with the ruling alliance or explore other options.
Political commentators note that Pawar’s death comes just as his influence had grown within the state government, where he had built strong working relationships — including with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who described Pawar’s passing as an “irreparable loss.” Pawar’s absence removes a seasoned strategist from the equation, prompting speculation on how the power dynamics among Mahayuti allies, rival parties and the broader political ecosystem in Maharashtra might shift in the months ahead.
