A college professor was stabbed to death at Malad railway station in Mumbai after a brief disagreement with another commuter while alighting from a crowded local train on Saturday evening. The victim, Alok Kumar Singh (33) — a mathematics lecturer at Narsee Monjee College was fatally injured when the argument escalated into violence.
The incident began as a minor dispute over space and exiting the train, which quickly turned heated. As the train approached Malad station, the accused, 27-year-old Omkar Shinde, pulled out a sharp object and stabbed Singh in the abdomen on platform no. 1, leaving him critically wounded. Singh was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead by doctors.
Commuters and onlookers were left shocked, and CCTV footage captured both the assault and the suspect fleeing the scene as crowds stood by.
Within approximately 12 hours, the Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested Shinde from the Kurar area in Malad, aided by extensive CCTV surveillance and facial recognition technology that helped trace his movements. The weapon used in the attack has not been recovered, and police are continuing the investigation.
Family members described Singh as a gentle and calm person who avoided confrontations, adding to the tragedy of the senseless violence on a busy railway platform.
The case has reignited discussions about safety and security on Mumbai’s local train network, which is heavily used by lakhs of daily commuters, as authorities review measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
