As Mumbai votes in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, attention has returned to one of India’s most powerful municipal bodies — the country’s richest civic authority with a budget that eclipses those of several Indian states. The BMC’s FY26 budget stands at around ₹74,427 crore, its highest ever and roughly 14 % larger than the previous year’s estimate, underscoring the immense fiscal responsibility tied to the civic poll results.
The size of the BMC’s finances — significantly higher than state budgets such as Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Tripura — reflects the scale of urban infrastructure, public transport, services and development projects managed by the civic body. With control of such substantial resources at stake, the outcome of these elections carries nationwide political and administrative significance.
Voters are choosing representatives capable of steering the city’s major projects — from transport hubs and coastal roads to property data reforms and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure — while also shaping how public funds are allocated for everyday services.
