The Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde named Jyoti Waghmare as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Maharashtra, signalling the party’s move to promote a new face within its leadership. The announcement came as political parties finalised their nominees ahead of the Upper House polls scheduled later this month.
Waghmare, a party spokesperson and academic by training, was seen as a relatively fresh entrant to national politics. She holds a PhD in English and had previously worked as a professor before becoming active in political and social movements. Her nomination was viewed as an attempt by the party to highlight an educated Dalit woman leader from western Maharashtra.
Originally from Solapur, Waghmare has been associated with Ambedkarite activism and social work for years. She joined the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction in 2023 and soon became one of its prominent spokespersons, regularly defending the party’s position in public debates and political gatherings.
Her selection came after speculation around several senior party figures who were believed to be in the race for the seat. The final decision to nominate Waghmare was seen as a strategic move to broaden the party’s social outreach and strengthen its presence in parts of western Maharashtra.
The nomination also clarified the lineup for the Rajya Sabha elections, where multiple parties from the ruling alliance and opposition blocs announced their candidates for the available seats from the state.
Political observers noted that the choice of Waghmare reflected a broader effort by the party to project new leadership while balancing regional and social representation in the state’s parliamentary politics.
